Hello and thank you for visiting my website!

I’m Matt Dawson, but my full name is Carlyle Matthew Dawson and sign my paintings “CMD”

I’m a self taught artist; that is, I haven’t attended an official art program and have no fine art degree. However, I’ve benefitted from lessons from many great YouTube creators and community education through UVU. I’ve been interested in art since I was young. I revisited watercolor in the fall of 2022 when I was able to take a 2 month sabbatical from work and go on a road/camping trip. During the ample downtime I created watercolor paintings inspired by the surroundings which spanned Idaho, Montana, North and South Dakota, Colorado, Texas, New Mexico and of course Utah where I live. I enjoyed watercolor painting on that trip so much that I continued painting on a frequent basis after the sabbatical ended and have never quit. More recently I’ve taken up oil painting as well and it’s my new favorite medium.

I strive to capture the unique feeling of the experience of viewing a scene in ways that a photo never does. I enjoy painting landscapes and whatever else captivates my creativity.
